The Avenue Apartments - Clintonville, Columbus

Background

Located in a predominantly residential section of Columbus, Ohio and just north of Ohio State University, The Ave Apartments are a mixed-use space that features two Urban Blooms Living Wall installations in a common area.  This completely custom-designed work includes two 30-foot-tall Living Walls that are installed at a 60-degree angle. The walls interact seamlessly with the space’s industrial features and bring the luxury of a large garden to the interior.

Challenges

This project transformed several times from initial concept to final product. A part of our philosophy is to work through any changes to the installations our clients might have to achieve a final product that works best for them. In this case, the deck was originally designed to be an exterior area, so the wall was designed to be an exterior living wall. While construction was in progress, it was determined that this space would be interior, not exterior. This change called for a complete redesign of the plant layout to incorporate plants that would thrive in an indoor setting.

Outcome

Cascading ferns with bright pops of color from Bromeliads and Anthuriums create a unique installation that is both soothing and exciting to view from below. Ideal for a community space, this Living Wall was designed to create a sense of unity among the building’s residents.  Our carefully designed irrigation system allows this Living Wall to thrive year-round with very little maintenance.
